12 of the best minimalist coat racks and coat stands

All homes need somewhere for hanging coats, bags, scarves and umbrellas, but just because coat racks and coat stands have to be practical doesn’t mean they can’t also be stylish. As the approaching onset of autumn means we’ll soon have lots of cold-weather gear cluttering up our hallways, I’ve picked out 12 beautiful designs which combine functionality with sleek, minimalist aesthetics.

There are wall-hung peg rails that work brilliantly in compact homes, together with free-standing designs that create statements in larger spaces. And, as always, I’ve tried to include something for every budget, from timeless investment pieces to bargains priced at less than £20…

The ‘Turn’ coat stand by Skagerak

Created by Line Depping, this ash coat stand was designed to show off the age-old craft of steam-bending wood, which is thought to have been used as far back as Viking times to make curved planks for ships’ hulls. I love the elegant arch shapes at the top, and the way you can hang items directly from the rails or purchase contrasting golden aluminium hooks. The ‘Grid’ coat hanger by Kristina Dam

Danish designer Kristina Dam’s ‘Grid’ coat hanger was inspired by clean architectural lines and the resulting piece is simple yet striking. It’s wall-mounted and so takes up no floor space, yet it still manages to incorporate built-in hooks and a rail that’s deep enough for standard coat hangers. The perforated steel shelf on top can be used for storing bags and hats, or for displaying ceramics, artworks and more. There’s also a matching coat stand for larger spaces.

‘The Dots’ by Muuto

Already a bit of a Scandinavian design icon, Lars Tornøe’s ‘The Dots’ come in various sizes which can be arranged however you want. There are metal and wooden versions in all sorts of different colours, and they can look sophisticated or playful. They work brilliantly in hallways, but I’ve also seen them used in bathrooms, bedrooms and offices, and even as handles on kitchen cabinets! What’s more, you can buy them in sets of five or individually, depending on your needs.

The ‘Afteroom’ coat hanger by Menu

With references to the Bauhaus movement and Modernism, the ‘Afteroom’ coat hanger is as much a sculpture for the wall as it is a practical piece of design. It can be hung vertically or horizontally, and the screws which fix it in place are hidden from sight to enhance the clean, minimalist look. It comes in white or black, with matching circles or contrasting brass and red ones; there’s also a smaller version with just two hooks, which can be used on its own or hung in clusters.

The ‘Pujo’ coat rack by Ferm Living

Designed in collaboration with Finnish studio Finna, Ferm Living’s ‘Pujo’ coat rack has a sleek, sculptural silhouette that creates a real statement without taking up much space. It fixes to the wall at the top and bottom, with a rail to accommodate hangers and a sphere for hats, scarves and jackets. I particularly love the use of black ash, which works perfectly with the striking shape.
