I have a confession to make: I can’t stand the coffee from pod machines. It’s always lukewarm, and to me it somehow manages to be bitter yet weak at the same time. So, without the space to fit a fancy barista-style gadget in our little kitchen, I like to prepare my cuppas the slow way using a cafetière (also known as a French press or coffee press) or a pour-over coffee maker.
When I use each method depends on my mood and the coffee variety. Cafetières steep the grounds and produce rich, strong cups; pour-over makers let the water soak through them and give smoother, slightly less intense results. Both take a little time, but there’s something almost meditative about the process. It’s a chance to slow down and take a pause during a busy day, and it only makes me savour the finished coffee even more.
Whichever you prefer, there are plenty of stylish, minimalist designs to choose from – and I’ve rounded up 20 of the best below. There are options to suit all budgets and needs, whether you’re making coffee for the family or just for yourself, but all are a great balance of form and function – the kind of thing that will look good on your kitchen counter or breakfast table for years to come.
