A stay at Copenhagen’s Hotel Danmark

When inconvenient flight times meant Lou from Littlegreenshed and I ended up with a night’s stopover in Copenhagen on the way back from our recent trip to Skåne, I wasn’t going to complain. Not only did it allow me to spend 24 hours in one of my favourite cities, it also gave me the chance to stay at the beautiful new Hotel Danmark.

I first wrote a post about the latest boutique offering from Brøchner Hotels, who also manage the super-stylish SP34, when it opened its doors back in spring, so I was very excited about trying it out in person. I wasn’t disappointed.

Located bang in the centre of town, just a few blocks from Tivoli and the central station, Hotel Danmark is spread across two buildings – one a listed 18^th-century townhouse, the other a 1960s concrete affair that’s been prettied up with glossy forest-green tiles by architect Morten Hedegaard.

Inside, the décor mixes classic mid-century lines with striking contemporary elements. The lobby doubles as a bar, with slatted wooden panels, leather sofas, dark-wood tables and brass and black-marble accents; there are also bespoke patterned carpets inspired by the mosaic floors at the nearby Thorvaldsens Museum. It’s a lovely place to sit and unwind, and I was pleased to find it offers a free wine hour each evening from 5 to 6pm – a welcome touch borrowed from SP34.

The 88 rooms are decorated in soothing shades of grey, green and white. Most are Standard Doubles, which tend to be fairly compact, although mine was actually quite large as it occupied the corner of one of the buildings. The trade-off was a tiny bathroom with no windows, whereas Lou had a smaller bedroom but a much bigger, airier ensuite. To be honest I would have happily stayed in either, as everything is so cleverly designed that you don’t really notice the lack of space.

The sleek black bedframes incorporate padded leather headboards, moveable side tables and brass lamps from Swedish brand RUBN (who also designed the lighting for SP34 and Skåne’s Wanås Hotel). The mattresses are wonderfully comfy and topped with snuggly woollen throws and pretty cushions from Danish company Aiayu, all for sale in the lobby if you fancy taking them home. There are also black-out curtains, desks, low-slung chairs, striking green-marble tables and tea- and coffee-making kit. Even my little bathroom was a joy to use, with its monochrome tiling, black-marble counter, handy storage shelves and REN toiletries. In fact, my only niggle was the lack of a plug socket by any furniture, which meant I had to leave my phone on the floor to charge.

If you have a bit more cash to splash, there are light-filled Superior Doubles with daybeds, plus roomy suites that boast all-inclusive minibars. And, for those on a budget or travelling in a group, there are six-berth bunk rooms which can be booked by the bed or as a whole.

Our flying visit meant we didn’t have time to try breakfast, but I’ve heard good things about the organic buffet spread. It was also a little too chilly to use the roof terrace, which has sweeping 360-degree views of the city, although I plan on making a beeline for it when I’m next in town.

All in all, I was very impressed with Hotel Danmark. Beautiful design, friendly service and a handy location are always an excellent combination (not to mention the free wine!), and I’m sure I’ll be checking in again soon.
