The autumn-winter 2021 collection from Ferm Living

September 3, 2021

There’s no ‘new finds’ post from me this month as I want to focus on a few more autumn-winter interiors collections instead. Today it’s the turn of Ferm Living, whose calm, elegant and gently playful selection instantly caught my eye.

This season, the Danish brand has honed in on the concept of our homes being our sanctuaries – cocoons where we can unwind, look inwards and treasure moments of quiet contemplation. With that in mind, there are lots of fluid shapes and tactile materials, alongside a beautiful nature-inspired colour palette of earthy pinks, browns, beiges and greens. They definitely tap into the way the world has changed over the last eighteen months, but they’re not tied to fleeting trends; instead, the focus is very much on crafting spaces with soul and slowly building a collection of objects that hold personal meaning.

This timeless, organic aesthetic shines through the brand-new pieces, many of which have been created with versatility and longevity in mind. They include the distinctive solid-walnut ‘Fève’ desk, which takes its name from the French word for ‘bean’ and works equally well as a dressing table or console table, and the ‘Mineral’ side table, which is carved from bianco curia marble and features rough hand-chiselled edges. There are also several designs inspired by and named after oysters: delicate bowls cast in brass, and a series of LED table and wall lamps that offset soft, undulating curves with a raw recycled-aluminium surface.

In addition, Ferm Living has joined forces with artist Berit Mogensen Lopez to create a new series of textiles based on her watercolour paintings. Called ‘Entire’, it pairs striking geometric shapes with muted colours and encompasses lampshades, tapestry blankets and upholstery. They look wonderful set against swathes of plain neutrals, and the overall effect is quirky but not overwhelming.

In the hope that gatherings might be a bit easier this winter than last, the collection has a secondary focus on hosting, togetherness and shared moments. There are vases and bowls that can be used to create beautiful displays, as well as candle and tea-light holders for that all-important welcoming glow. My favourites are the ‘Water Swirl’ series, whose mouth-blown glass resembles cascading liquid and almost dances in the light, and the ‘Halo’ range, which is hand-stretched as the molten glass cools to produce distinctive peaks and spires. I also love the look of the grooved ‘Fountain’ centrepiece, ‘Luce’ candle holder and petite ‘Ary’ vases, all of which take their cue from classical forms.

Other new accessories include snuggly cushions and rugs in bouclé, high-pile New Zealand wool and tufted linear patterns, and the blackened-aluminium ‘Yama’ desk accessories, which again showcase curves inspired by the natural landscape. And I have to mention the ‘Tiny’ lamp series, which joins Ferm Living’s growing lighting range. Available in three different sizes and a choice of brass or steel, it has slimline proportions and a simple shape that were designed specifically for shelves, windowsills and other tight corners. What’s more, the handy tilting head can be used to alter the look of the piece and the mood of the space in seconds.

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!

I've been a fan of their sustainable bamboo kitchens and furniture for a long time, so this was a real treat. And the space itself is full of the time-worn textures and beautiful details that always catch my eye.
