12 of the best minimalist floor lamps

April 6, 2018

The best minimalist floor lamps | These Four Walls blog

It’s ages since I’ve done a ‘best of’ round-up, but they were often picked out as a favourite by the people who kindly responded to my reader survey earlier this year, so I think it’s time I restarted the series.

For this installment I’m focusing on minimalist floor lamps – something which I’m currently researching for my own living-room makeover. There are hundreds of wonderful designs to choose from, so to narrow things down a bit I’ve focused on simple, stylish and functional lamps in black, white, grey and chrome.

As always, I’ve tried to pick something for all budgets, so you’ll find everything from design classics which are true investment pieces right down to affordable options costing less than £150; there’s even a bargain from IKEA’s collaboration with HAY, priced at a mere £45! Many of them are dimmable and adjustable, so you can create exactly the ambiance you want, and there are compact designs that will fit even the tightest of spaces, as well as statement lamps for those with a bit more room to spare.

So, here are my top picks…

  1. ‘Peek’ dimmable floor lamp by Menu (available in black and white), £399, Skandium
  2. ‘Caravaggio Read’ dimmable and adjustable floor lamp by Lightyears (available in black, white, grey and opal glass), £414, Cloudberry Living
  3. ‘YPPERLIG’ dimmable and adjustable LED floor lamp (available in dark grey only), £45, IKEA
  4. ‘AJ’ floor lamp by Louis Poulsen (available in 10 different colours), £735, Skandium
  5. ‘Gräshoppa’ lamp by Gubi (available in nine different colours), £666, Clippings.com
  6. ‘Collet’ floor lamp (available in chrome, copper and brass), £119, Made.com
  7. ‘Revolve’ adjustable floor lamp (available in black and white), €409, Bolia
  8. ‘Bobby’ double-jointed floor lamp (available in black only), £65, Habitat
  9. ‘Leaf’ dimmable and adjustable LED floor lamp by Muuto (available in white, green, grey and black), £299, Skandium
  10. ‘IC F1’ floor lamp by Flos (available in chrome, brass and limited-edition black), £489, Skandium
  11. ‘Birdy’ floor lamp by Northern (available in off white, grey, black, and black and brass), £363, Nest.co.uk
  12. ‘Snowball’ dimmable floor lamp by Northern (available in steel and white), £200, Cloudberry Living

And here’s a closer look at a few of my favourites:

‘Leaf’ by Muuto

Muuto‘s ‘Leaf’ lamp was designed by Stockholm-based duo Roberg & Ridderstråle, who took their inspiration from – you’ve guessed it – the shape of leaves. The subtly curved LED head can be tilted to direct the light, and it’s dimmable, too. I particularly like the balanced aesthetic and the angled stem.

‘IC F1’ by Flos

I love the elegant, sculptural look of the ‘IC F1’, designed by Michael Anastassiades for Flos. It’s made up of a blown-glass opal diffuser balanced on an angular stem, which is available in chrome, brass and limited-edition black. It forms part of the wider ‘IC’ family, which also includes table lamps, pendant lights and the larger ‘F2’ floor lamp.

‘Snowball’ by Northern

Created by Trond Svendgard for Norwegian brand Northern, the ‘Snowball’ lamp is a beautifully understated, clean-lined piece. Its slim stem is topped by a mouth-blown glass globe the size of a snowball, and it’s available in white or steel.

‘Revolve’ by Bolia

The ‘Revolve’ lamp by Bolia is a collaboration between Dutch designers Rachel Griffin of Earnest Studio and Emilie Pallard. It’s minimalist in appearance and very clever when it comes to functionality, with an elegant stem anchored by a cylindrical stone base. The LED bulb can be moved up and down and rotated 360 degrees, meaning you can direct the light anywhere you want.

‘Peek’ by Menu

Menu‘s ‘Peek’ floor lamp has a humble, playful look. It was designed by Jonas Wagell, who wanted to create an object that expressed personality. There are only three components: a heavy base, a slender stem, and a shade which gracefully peeks over the back of a sofa or armchair. As well as being an interesting design feature, the tip of the stem acts as a dimmer.

‘YPPERLIG’ by IKEA x HAY

Finally, the ‘YPPERLIG’ floor lamp was designed by HAY for its much-lauded collaboration with IKEA. It’s the cheapest of the lot at only £45, but it doesn’t scrimp on form or function, with a rotating stem, a tilting head and an LED bulb that can be dimmed and turned on/off at the touch of a finger. I have the table-lamp version in my home office and I love its versatility and minimalist appearance.

Which is your favourite?

I now have this design in three different colourways around the house, and this is definitely my favourite to date!

A few weeks ago I travelled to Drammen in Norway f A few weeks ago I travelled to Drammen in Norway for the big project I'm working on (more on that soon), and while I was there I had a look around @askogeng's workshop. I've been a fan of their sustainable bamboo kitchens and furniture for a long time, so this was a real treat. And the space itself is full of the time-worn textures and beautiful details that always catch my eye.

Is it just me, or are slightly droopy flowers the Is it just me, or are slightly droopy flowers the most elegant? Anyway, these are butterfly ranunculus - always a favourite. I couldn't resist the lovely soft peach ones - such a pretty colour for spring.

If you've seen my Stories, you'll know we've had a stressful Sunday and Monday thanks to a poorly cat and some big house news. At least it's only a four-day week!
