The Kubus by Lassen candleholder is one of my all-time favourite designs. Created by architect Mogens Lassen in 1962 and at first reserved exclusively for his family and friends, it’s a Danish classic that now pops up in Scandinavian-style interiors everywhere. The original eight-prong version is perhaps the most iconic, but there are also one-, two- and four-candle options, as well as a matching bowl and matchbox holder – all sleek, striking and beautifully proportioned.
After coveting a Kubus candleholder for years, I finally treated myself to one during a recent visit to Copenhagen. I spent ages hovering around the display in interiors emporium Illums Bolighus, trying to choose between the various colours available – so long, in fact, that my boyfriend took himself off for a coffee while I made up my mind. In the end, classic black just pipped white, nickel and copper to the post, but just imagine how much harder my decision would have been now, with the news that by Lassen has expanded the Kubus collection to include brass options.
The sparkling golden finish of the latest additions is incredibly eye-catching, and it will develop a lovely, rich patina over time. It looks fantastic against muted walls and textured surfaces, or mixed and matched with other colours from the range. And it provides a great way to introduce the current trend for brass into a home without worrying about longevity, as the Kubus designs are so timeless that there’s no risk of them dating as the years go by.
The brass options will be available across the Kubus collection from early October, and there’s a list of stockists on the by Lassen website. I might have to add one to my Christmas list to sit alongside my much-loved black design…
