Christmas gift ideas

November 28, 2016

Christmas gift ideas | These Four Walls blog

Is it just me, or does anyone else spend the whole year spotting gorgeous things which they’d love to buy for friends and family (or themselves!), only for their mind to go blank when it comes to actually finding Christmas gifts? To make things a little easier for anyone suffering from the same affliction, I’ve rounded up a few ideas for fellow fans of simple, Scandinavian-inspired design. Time to start shopping – or dropping a few not-so-subtle hints, of course…

Nuori

One of my recent discoveries is Danish skincare brand Nuori, which uses only natural ingredients. There are hand and body products, face masks and creams, all with wonderfully fresh scents that combine vanilla, almonds and botanicals. What’s more, the minimal, monochrome packaging looks fantastic on the bathroom shelf.

The White Company

Ever-reliable The White Company has a beautiful range of gifts – everything from scented candles and bath goodies to simple yet elegant tableware. My favourites are the woollen items, including this pair of grey cable-knit slipper boots, which I’ve had the pleasure of testing out. They’re soft, warm and snuggly – ideal for curling up on a cold winter’s night.

HAY

Danish favourite HAY has launched a range of curated gift boxes, just in time for Christmas. There are small, medium and large versions in a variety of themes, all packed with HAY’s trademark colourful yet minimal designs. Examples include the ‘Bath’ box (a towel, washbag, mirror and face cloth), the ‘Dining’ box (wine glasses, coasters and a tray) and the ‘Kitchen’ box (a trivet, bottle opener and tea towels).

Shedquarters

If you’re looking for contemporary homeware, try Shedquarters, an online store with a handpicked range of beautiful designs. Going on my wishlist are the Forestry Wool ‘Triangle’ blankets, the marbled ceramics by Dutch-based duo Alissa + Nienke, and the minimalist coffee cups by Denmark-based Nobel Design.

Olga Prinku

Northern England-based designer Olga Prinku, whose stunning home I featured earlier this year, hand-knits a range of products which make beautiful gifts. There are cushions, chunky blankets, scarves and children’s hats; I particularly love the textured woollen throw, which comes in off white, light grey and dark grey.

Skandinavisk

I’ve talked before about how much I love Skandinavisk scented candles, which are all inspired by different aspects of Scandinavian lifestyles and landscapes. They make perfect presents, and the company has released three gift sets featuring mini versions of some of its most popoular fragrances – ‘Vinter’ (‘SKOG’, ‘SNÖ’ and ‘BÆR’), ‘Home’ (‘KOTO’, ‘HYGGE’ and ‘RO’) and ‘Nature’ (‘FJORD’, ‘Ö’ and ‘HAV’).

Ever After Press

I know Christmas cards aren’t strictly presents, but I had to include this minimalist range from Paris-based studio Ever After Press, which combines a striking pastel and monochrome colour palette with modern typography, understated illustration and atmospheric photography. All the designs are printed on textured heavyweight card stock and available for international shipping.

I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley a I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley and I have been working on for the past few months: a new book!

Called Bring The Outside In, it explores how to harness the wellbeing-enhancing power of biophilic design (design that reconnects you with nature) in your own home. It's packed with clear, practical advice, plus peeks inside 12 beautiful real-life homes that demonstrate biophilic design in action in a wide range of settings, from city apartments to rural farmhouses.

I feel incredibly proud to have written one book, let alone two, and this one was extra-special for two reasons. Firstly, it's a topic that I've long been fascinated by and one that combines two of my passions, interior design and nature. And secondly, I was lucky enough to work on it with a friend. We had so much fun travelling around Europe capturing the homes featured (some very brief glimpses to whet your appetite here!) and we'll share some behind-the-scenes snippets soon.

Bring The Outside In will be published by @rylandpetersandsmall on 14th October and is available to pre-order now - just follow the link in my bio.

I've spent many happy times there over the years as one of my closest friends lives there, but she's about to move house. So, Chris and I made the most of our last visit before she relocates - and the weather was certainly kind to us!

Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

A few snaps from the gorgeous @gubiofficial showro A few snaps from the gorgeous @gubiofficial showroom in London, which I visited during @clerkenwelldesignweek earlier this week. I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Which room or corner is your favourite...?
