Today I’m taking you on a virtual trip to Copenhagen, where one of my favourite Danish brands, Ferm Living, has just opened the doors to its brand-new showroom and concept store.
I visited Ferm’s previous home – a period apartment above the city’s main shopping street – several times over the years, and I always admired the way it was decorated and styled. But it was rapidly becoming too small for the company’s growing collection and was accessible by appointment only. The new place, by contrast, is a vast 450sqm and is open to the public, so anyone can pop in for a browse or some shopping.
Located at Kuglegårdsvej 1-5 (just across the bridge from Nyhavn), it occupies a beautiful building that dates all the way back to 1777 and used to house Denmark’s Defence Command. The whole place is brimming with original features, including gnarled beams, soaring rafters, exposed brick walls and tall arched windows that flood the space with light. Combined with polished concrete floors and Crittall-style glazing, they make the perfect backdrop for Ferm’s furniture and accessories, which have grown increasingly sophisticated in recent years. There’s a wonderful mix of understated neutrals and earthy colours, and I love the contrast between the textured architecture and the sleek lines of the pieces on display.
Despite the open-plan layout, the space is arranged as a series of rooms, with inspiration for every area of the home. There’s a living room with sofas and a contemporary fireplace, a cosy-looking bedroom, a very stylish bathroom, a fun kids’ room and an office with book-lined shelves; there’s even a corner dedicated to the garden, with lush greenery spilling out from rows of Ferm’s famous plant boxes. Intriguingly, the brand’s co-founders Martin and Trine have also decided to sell a range of vintage finds picked up on their travels, alongside a curated selection of coffee-table books and plants.
I can’t wait to have a proper look around when I next visit Copenhagen in person, but in the meantime here’s a sneak peek thanks to the press photos…
