Stylish, ethical furniture from Out & Out

I love discovering new sources of beautiful homeware and today I want to introduce you to one that has recently popped onto my radar: Out & Out.

Based here in the UK, this independent online store was founded by Daniel Fairburn, a furniture designer who had previously spent eight years working for a Danish manufacturer located in Vietnam, creating pieces for the likes of IKEA, Habitat and BoConcept. After spotting a gap in the market for stylish, ethically sourced and affordable items, he decided to use his skills and experience to launch a company of his own, and Out & Out was born in 2013.

Daniel now works with furniture makers around the world, sketching designs and visiting the factories to create products that match his vision, all crafted using natural materials and FSC-certified wood wherever possible. The result is a wide range of high-quality contemporary furniture, encompassing eclectic pieces as well as the kind of pared-back Scandinavian style that I gravitate towards.

My favourite is the ‘Bestman’ armchair (£399), which pairs grey woollen upholstery with elegant black-steel legs. The influence of Daniel’s years working for a Nordic company is clear to see in the understated aesthetic and slightly rounded, cocooning form, and it looks like the perfect place to curl up with a blanket and a book.

Similarly sleek is ‘Lorna’, a modern take on the traditional rocking chair that’s available in grey, forest green or blue.

I also love the look of the clean-lined ‘Ruben’ and ‘Guarda’ sofa ranges (£369-499) and the oak ‘Caso’ extendable dining table and sideboard (£799 each), all of which have echoes of Danish mid-century design.

What’s more, Out & Out has just launched a new collection of coffee and side tables made from reclaimed mango wood – a particularly sustainable material, as mango trees mature much quicker than oak and other varieties. Prices start at just £59, and there are all sorts of shapes and sizes to choose from.

There’s plenty on offer when it comes to lighting, too, including a range of minimalist ceramic pendant lamps by Out & Out design partner Room 9. Inspired by traditional French spun-steel lights, they’re handmade in the UK and combine matte earthenware shades with eye-catching cords and glazed interiors in a range of colours.

I now have this design in three different colourways around the house, and this is definitely my favourite to date!

A few weeks ago I travelled to Drammen in Norway f A few weeks ago I travelled to Drammen in Norway for the big project I'm working on (more on that soon), and while I was there I had a look around @askogeng's workshop. I've been a fan of their sustainable bamboo kitchens and furniture for a long time, so this was a real treat. And the space itself is full of the time-worn textures and beautiful details that always catch my eye.

Is it just me, or are slightly droopy flowers the Is it just me, or are slightly droopy flowers the most elegant? Anyway, these are butterfly ranunculus - always a favourite. I couldn't resist the lovely soft peach ones - such a pretty colour for spring.

If you've seen my Stories, you'll know we've had a stressful Sunday and Monday thanks to a poorly cat and some big house news. At least it's only a four-day week!
