Guest room styling with Cox & Cox

November 2, 2016

Guest room styling with Cox & Cox | These Four Walls blog

The ongoing redecoration of our house continues slowly but surely. I shared the makeover of one of our two guest rooms a few months ago, and now here’s a peek at the other, which we’ve finally managed to finish.

Even though this room is the bigger of the two, it’s a very odd shape as the former owners carved a corner out of it to form the master-bedroom ensuite. We’ve therefore kept the furniture very simple – just a double divan bed and a couple of bedside tables (one a reclaimed milking stool picked up at a flea market, the other a games table which Chris made as a Design & Technology project at school!).

We’ve used this room to display a collection of photography prints of 19th- and 20th-century Morocco which I picked up in Marrakech a few years ago. We therefore wanted to give it a bit of a North African theme, without going overboard and creating something which would look totally out of place in our otherwise minimal house.

Step forward Cox & Cox and its cotton ‘Maroq’ cushion, which combines pale grey, charcoal and soft pink. It was designed by House of Rym, a homeware label founded by Tunisian duo Rym Tounsi and Zied Youssef, who wanted to combine traditional North African handicrafts with a contemporary, Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic. The woven pattern is a modern interpretation of intricate Moorish tiling, and it fits perfectly into the scheme; there’s also a matching throw, which I’m very tempted to treat myself to!

Other finishing touches in the room include sheer curtains with delicate embroidery that looks a little like Moroccan pom-poms (we’ve also added a black-out blind behind them), a blown-glass bottle (another flea-market find), and a grey linen throw from The Linen Works. And, as with the other bedroom, I’ve added a few little treats to make guests feel at home – a scented candle, some relaxing pillow spray, a carafe of water, a choice of feather or fibre pillows (a must, as one visiting parent prefers one and another the other!), and a few magazines to browse.

So there you go – the finished room. The cat certainly seems to like it, but I’d love to know what you think…

I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley a I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley and I have been working on for the past few months: a new book!

Called Bring The Outside In, it explores how to harness the wellbeing-enhancing power of biophilic design (design that reconnects you with nature) in your own home. It's packed with clear, practical advice, plus peeks inside 12 beautiful real-life homes that demonstrate biophilic design in action in a wide range of settings, from city apartments to rural farmhouses.

I feel incredibly proud to have written one book, let alone two, and this one was extra-special for two reasons. Firstly, it's a topic that I've long been fascinated by and one that combines two of my passions, interior design and nature. And secondly, I was lucky enough to work on it with a friend. We had so much fun travelling around Europe capturing the homes featured (some very brief glimpses to whet your appetite here!) and we'll share some behind-the-scenes snippets soon.

Bring The Outside In will be published by @rylandpetersandsmall on 14th October and is available to pre-order now - just follow the link in my bio.

Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Which room or corner is your favourite...?
