Home tour | A light-filled house in London

Home tour | A light-filled house in London | These Four Walls blog

I included a couple of photos of this beautiful house in last week’s post about maximising natural light, and I couldn’t resist sharing a few more. Located in Fulham, southwest London, the Victorian terrace has been reworked by its photographer and software-developer owners to create a bright, minimalist family home. It has a distinct Scandinavian influence throughout, along with lots of clever tricks that flood the interiors with light.

The ground floor has been opened up to create a large kitchen and living space. Crittall-style windows and a row of skylights above the island unit bring in plenty of sunshine, while crisp white walls and pale oak flooring from Danish company Dinesen bounce it around the room. Dinesen wood is also used for the kitchen units, which merge seamlessly into the wall behind and introduce texture without detracting from the uncluttered feel. Grey limestone counters, white Gubi ‘Semi’ pendant lights and open shelves stacked with ceramics add further interest. I particularly like the dining area, with its Saarinen ‘Tulip’ table and elegant panelling (a contemporary take on a classic feature, made from strips of MDF).

Just beyond the kitchen is a section of glass patio which illuminates the house’s basement, now an office space and den. Here, solid walls have been replaced with internal glazing, allowing light to flow from one area to the next.

The clever use of light continues in the bedrooms, where custom-designed two-tier shutters block or bring in sunshine as needed. They work brilliantly with the natural linens and salvaged wooden furniture, which add a hint of rusticity to the otherwise sleek spaces.

The same shutters are used in the bathroom, alongside yet more Dinesen wood – here turned into a vanity unit and a surround for the tub. The raw-brass taps and shower fittings were handmade by the owners and are designed to develop a rich patina over time. They’re offset beautifully by pale grey hexagonal tiles.

All in all, it’s a wonderfully calming, clean-lined home with just the right amount of character. I don’t know about you, but I have a serious case of house envy!

Snaps from a lovely long weekend in leafy Richmond Snaps from a lovely long weekend in leafy Richmond, West London. I've spent many happy times there over the years as one of my closest friends lives there, but she's about to move house. So, Chris and I made the most of our last visit before she relocates - and the weather was certainly kind to us!

Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!
