Home tour | A revamped New York brownstone

August 28, 2018

Home tour - a revamped New York brownstone | These Four Walls blog

Today’s home tour comes to you from New York, where a dark and dated apartment in a 1940s brownstone block has been given a very stylish makeover by design studio sheep + stone.

Set in Gramercy Park, it has a gently glamorous air and is a perfect example of how minimalism needn’t be stark or soulless. And, despite its high-end appearance and pricey furnishings, it’s brimming with ideas that could be incorporated into any home, no matter what the budget.

The apartment faces an inner courtyard and lacks natural light at certain times of the day, so the first task was to open up and brighten the interior. An old pantry was knocked down to create a larger living space and dark wooden shutters were removed; banks of internal windows and an open staircase with floating steps were also installed to filter light from one room to another. In addition, mirrors were cleverly positioned to bounce light into gloomy corners – a very simple and cost-effective solution if you don’t have the funds for structural changes.

The whole place now looks airy and spacious – a feel that’s enhanced by the limited colour palette of white, grey, beige and black. It’s far from boring, though, thanks to a clever combination of different textures. Sleek white walls and smooth floors sit alongside swathes of exposed stone, and touches of brass, marble and blackened metal are dotted throughout. There’s also a wonderful balance between pale and dark in the furniture, fixtures and accessories – another easy-to-borrow idea that doesn’t require lots of investment.

My favourite space is the double-height living area, which blends Scandinavian-inspired simplicity with New York loft-style living. The light-grey Egg Collective sofa works perfectly with the black-stained coffee table, as does the white marble dining table with the smoked-oak ‘In Between’ chairs, designed by Sam Kallio for &tradition. Accessories have been kept to a minimum (just a few monochrome cushions and a fluffy Moroccan-style rug), but there’s still plenty of drama thanks to a stunning ‘Cloud’ chandelier by Apparatus and a dual-arm wall light by Serge Mouille.

I also love the bedroom, which is more understated and calming but no less appealing. Again, there are lots of different textures on display, including smooth opal-glass bedside lamps, a soft leather headboard and patina’d bedside tables from BBDW. The same applies in the bathrooms, where brass and matte-black fittings contrast with smooth marble and simple white tiles.

All in all, a beautiful home that has my head spinning with ideas. How about you? What aspects of this apartment caught your eye?

What a lovely, inspiring and bright home! I’m on the same page as you because the aspect of the apartment that caught my eye is the living area which borrows and mixes the Scandinavian style simplicity with modern New York living style in such a stunning way. The living room doesn’t have to have a lot of details and accessories to look cozy and inviting and this apartment is the ideal proof of that. Also, the combination of pale and dark colors in the furniture is such a clever idea, I love it! Oh my, is that beautiful rug actually our fluffy Beni Ourain rug?

It’s such a beautiful mix isn’t it? And one that’s very achievable, no matter what your budget. And proof that Beni Ourain rugs can work in any setting, too…!

I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley a I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley and I have been working on for the past few months: a new book!

Called Bring The Outside In, it explores how to harness the wellbeing-enhancing power of biophilic design (design that reconnects you with nature) in your own home. It's packed with clear, practical advice, plus peeks inside 12 beautiful real-life homes that demonstrate biophilic design in action in a wide range of settings, from city apartments to rural farmhouses.

I feel incredibly proud to have written one book, let alone two, and this one was extra-special for two reasons. Firstly, it's a topic that I've long been fascinated by and one that combines two of my passions, interior design and nature. And secondly, I was lucky enough to work on it with a friend. We had so much fun travelling around Europe capturing the homes featured (some very brief glimpses to whet your appetite here!) and we'll share some behind-the-scenes snippets soon.

Bring The Outside In will be published by @rylandpetersandsmall on 14th October and is available to pre-order now - just follow the link in my bio.

I've spent many happy times there over the years as one of my closest friends lives there, but she's about to move house. Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Which room or corner is your favourite...?
