Home tour | A Swedish apartment with splashes of spring colour

Home tour | A Swedish apartment with splashes of spring colour | These Four Walls blog

Adding accent colours to a muted scheme without overpowering it is always tricky, but this three-bedroom corner apartment in Gothenburg is a perfect example of how to do it well. Throughout, it mixes minimal monochrome décor with touches of spring-like blues and greens, creating a space that’s both fresh and calming.

The lounge is my favourite room. The mint-green sofa works brilliantly next to the marble top and brass legs of the coffee table, and it’s piled with cushions in a lovely mix of clashing floral and geometric prints. There are also pops of delicate colour in the artwork on the walls, the glass bottles on the floor and the throw on the armchair, all balanced out by swathes of grey, black and white.

The same colour and pattern combinations are used in the master bedroom, where a distressed blue chair and a couple of bright storage boxes sit next to grey linen and a bank of white wardrobes. The centrepiece is a fabulous antique bed, whose upholstered ends contrast beautifully with the striped bedspread.

Over in the kitchen, sleek black units and white metro tiles are pepped up with colourful crockery and a mint-green toaster; I’d be tempted to add a matching Smeg fridge, but the stainless-steel appliances look great, too.

Other interesting elements in the apartment include the butterfly prints and mid-century modern sideboards in the bedroom and kitchen, and the use of mismatched dining chairs all painted in the same shade. I also love the white-washed floorboards, which bounce light around the rooms. Best of all, there are plants, flowers and candles everywhere – essential accessories for any home in my book!

Just lovely. Really like this house, and am surprised at just how much I like the mint green sofa! It wouldn’t normally be something I’d go for, but totally works in this space! Thanks for sharing Abi x

Thanks for your comment Jill. With regards to the sofa, me too! It looks so lovely next to the greys and whites – striking but not at all overpowering x

I’ve seen a rug like this in so many photos recently and I’m desperate to get one! Do you know where it is from? I have a velvet green sofa I think it would work nicely with. x

I think the rug is from Danish brand House Doctor – http://en.housedoctor.dk/-/soft-home/rugs. There’s a list of UK stockists on their website. I love the sound of your sofa! x

I've spent many happy times there over the years as one of my closest friends lives there, but she's about to move house. So, Chris and I made the most of our last visit before she relocates - and the weather was certainly kind to us!

Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!
