I hope you all enjoyed a long, lazy Easter weekend? I’ve spent a few days away from blogging, catching up with friends and ploughing through the last bits of wedding planning (just over three weeks to go!), but it’s time to get back into the swing of things. And a peek inside this beautiful apartment in the Swedish city of Gothenburg seemed like the perfect way to kick off!
What immediately caught my eye about this home is the clever use of texture. There are different surfaces everywhere you look – exposed brick, polished concrete, rich wood, gleaming metal – but they’re broken up with swathes of white, which means the apartment still retains an airy, uncluttered and cohesive feel. I also love the period features – the ornate cornicing, the grand double doors, the parquet floor – which provide a striking contrast to the more industrial, loft-like elements.
In the open-plan living space, sleek furniture, a simple monochrome colour palette and minimalist white kitchen units are used to ensure the walls do the talking. I particularly like the HAY coffee table, which works perfectly in this setting, and the understated black and white cushions on the sofa. The dining table is covered with a linen tablecloth and flanked by metal ‘Tolix’ chairs, neatly connecting the sitting and cooking spaces at either end of the room by echoing the steel worktops and the soft furnishings. And there are wonderful spring touches dotted here and there, including potted hyacinth bulbs and vases of magnolia blossom.
The bedroom continues the monochrome theme, but incorporates softer textures such as crumpled linen bedding and a woollen rug to create the sense of a calming sanctuary. There’s also a papered feature wall behind the bed – something which I normally don’t like, but here the pattern and colours are subtle enough to blend into the overall scheme. My favourite part of the room, though, is the ‘String’ lounge chair, designed by WM Studio for Menu – a lovely place to sit and read. A few well-chosen artworks provide additional interest without detracting from the room’s soothing simplicity.
Finally, I have to include a mention of the second bedroom, which has been turned into a pretty childhood paradise decorated in pale grey and dusty pink. The IKEA bed is an excellent choice for a kid’s room as it has storage drawers to hide away toys and games; the printed Ferm Living bedding and the bunting strung above it add the perfect finishing touches. And what kid, big or small, wouldn’t adore having their own teepee to hide in..?
