This month’s Instagram inspiration comes from UK-based Belgian photographer Emilie Van Camp (@emilievancamp), whose images are beautifully striking in their simplicity. I’ve been following her feed for a while now, and I love her clean, calm aesthetic and the way she combines travel adventures with evocative little snippets of daily life – everything from an umbrella resting by a doorway to letters stuffed in a mailbox. And I was recently delighted to discover that she’s also launched a blog, Moments of Life, where she shares more pictures, together with stories about the people and places they show.
Over to Emilie herself for more…
Please can you tell us a bit about yourself, where you’re based and your background?
“I’m quite a passionate person and as a result I often struggle to know exactly what I want to do with my life. Over the past four years I’ve been fortunate enough to live in some awe-inspiring places around the UK, from the Peak District to the Scottish Highlands and now London. Although I do miss home – Belgium – I’m extremely grateful for the time I’ve had in each of these beautiful yet drastically different areas. For a very long time I’d wanted to have my own little internet corner where I could share my adventures and experiences with the rest of the world, and this year Moments of Life finally became a reality.”
How long have you been using Instagram, and how did you get started?
“I’ve been using Instagram for just over a year now. I created my account last September when I was living in the Highlands and in need of creative inspiration!”
What do you like about Instagram?
“What I love most about it is the genuine nature of the community. I have met so many wonderful people and it has offered me some fantastic collaborations. It’s amazing how thousands and thousands of people around the world encourage and support each other, and are driven by the same passion to create. I love how each account is a little diary of moments that you can share and explore, and that fire your imagination.”
What inspires your photos?
“Life and nature. Finding beauty in the little things that surround me is one of my favourite things to do. I believe inspiration can be found anywhere and everywhere: in a smile, in a place, in a mood, in a landscape, in a shape, in a colour…. You just need to see it and grasp it.”
How would you describe your photography style?
“I’m not sure I could properly define my style, however I try to keep it as pure, as authentic and as minimal as possible. I would love to think that my pictures tell stories and encourage emotions, even a brief smile on someone’s face.”
How do you take and edit your photos?
“I mainly use my Canon 7D, although whenever I can I attempt to steal my other half’s iPhone 6! When I decide to edit my pictures, I make little changes either on Instagram itself or via VSCO Cam, but only adjusting the brightness or contrast; nothing else.”
What catches your eye on others’ Instagram feeds?
“I love simplicity and consistency, but what I enjoy most are accounts that make me dream. I want to see more of the world and Instagram can offer that in a second… a moment of levity, of escape.”
What’s your top Instagram tip?
“I know it might sound clichéd, but stay true to who you are and share what makes you happy. And don’t forget to have a little fun along the way!”
Thanks Emilie!
