As I seem to be spending much of this summer in Scandinavia, I couldn’t resist giving a Scandi slant to this month’s Instagram inspiration post. So, I’m delighted to introduce Veronika of beautiful Norwegian blog So Soft Sunday (@sosoftsunday).
Veronika is based in Oslo, and scrolling through her Instagram gallery to view her home city through her eyes is always a joy. Her images have an ethereal, dream-like quality and capture the magic of the seasons – snow-dusted trees, moody skies, mirror-like lakes… I also love their timeless, gently nostalgic feel, which Veronika achieves through subtle filters and faded colours; I can instantly spot one of her photos when it crops up in my feed.
Over to Veronika for more…
Please can you tell us a bit about yourself and your blog?
“I’m a blogger, ceramics student and eco-enthusiast from Oslo. I started blogging in early 2009 as I had a desire to explore, share and inspire. I cover soft, minimalist interiors, Scandinavian design, photography and DIY projects, always with a personal aesthetic.”
How long have you been using Instagram, and how did you get started?
“I started using Instagram a little over a year ago. My intention was to create a visual diary to collect memories. I also wanted to connect with my blog readers and blogging friends on a more personal level, sharing small moments from my life.”
What do you like about Instagram?
“It’s a very creative and supportive community, where you can be inspired every day or just daydream as you scroll down beautiful feeds. Through photographs we show others how we look at the world, and I believe that’s a huge part of who we are. Instagram is a lovely place to reflect and express ourselves, and to connect with like-minded people.”
What inspires your photos?
“I love walking around parks, the coast and the city streets and looking at the details that surround me. Colours, organic shapes, the changing light and moods… I find myself endlessly inspired by nature, but also by urban environments.”
How would you describe your photography style?
“My style has evolved over time, but I’d describe it as soft and quite romantic. I’m passionate about Japanese and Scandinavian simplicity, so my photos reflect this, too.”
How do you take and edit your images?
“I take all photos with my iPhone, and I prefer to take them outdoors in natural light. Every season has its own, unique lighting, and I love to capture that. When editing, I enjoy playing around with filters to create a softer touch and fade the image a little, mostly using the Afterlight app. Lately I’ve been experimenting with cropping photos rather than using squares, too – it gives me more control over composition and perspective.”
What catches your eye on others’ Instagram feeds?
“I adore feeds with a consistent thread of colour, shape or theme. Outdoor landscapes, flowers and minimal fashion and interiors always inspire me, too.”
Finally, what’s your top Instagram tip?
“Compose images that are pleasing to the eye, and play around with angles rather than just pointing and shooting. And always pay attention to the light when taking photos – natural light works best!”
Thanks Veronika!
