A soft beige makeover for ‘The Home’ by Ferm Living

A soft beige makeover for 'The Home' by Ferm Living | These Four Walls blog

If you’re looking for some weekend decor inspiration, this might be just the ticket: the latest incarnation of Ferm Living‘s Copenhagen showroom, known as ‘The Home’.

Used to display the brand’s pieces in a real-life setting, the city-centre apartment gets a makeover at the start of each season and its spring-summer 2019 guise is perhaps my favourite yet.

The living room, dining room and master bedroom are all decorated in soft beige – one of this year’s key interiors trends. It’s a shade that many people consider boring, but I love it. It’s ideal for creating a calm, cosy feel and it has a warmth than many other neutrals lack. And, as long as you avoid the yellow undertones that have given beige much of its bad reputation, it can be a very sophisticated and timeless choice indeed.

What’s more, beige works well with all sorts of other colours: grey, chocolate brown, blush pink, rust red… Here it’s offset against furniture and accessories in black, white and cream, which give it a smart, striking edge and prevent any risk of blandness. Lots of texture – snuggly bouclé sofas, fluffy rugs, dried fern leaves, woven bedspreads, smooth marble, brushed brass – add depth and interest, while dark ceilings, doors and curtains create an element of drama.

The kitchen has also had a revamp. Gone are the forest-green cabinets of before and in their place is a honeyed sand colour. It works brilliantly against the crisp white walls, charcoal-grey worktops and dark flooring, and the overall feel is much lighter and airier. Earthy ceramics and minimalist handles in brass and marble add the perfect finishing touches.

As for the bathroom, it’s brimming with leafy greenery – another great way to add interest and texture to a beige scheme. There are plants on the windowsill, the floor and the stool, and even plants dangling from the ceiling. A dark-grey feature wall behind the bath creates an eye-catching focal point.

Finally, we come to the children’s room. Here, beige has been given a fun, playful twist with the addition of striped wallpaper and a swathe of ochre on the lower half of the walls. It’s a look that would lend itself well to grown-up spaces, too – minus the kids’ bedding and toys, of course!

You can see more new-season inspiration from Ferm Living in this post. And if you want a peek at what the apartment used to look like, you’ll find photos from my spring 2018 visit here and images of the autumn-winter 2018 scheme here. I’d love to know which version is your favourite!

I've spent many happy times there over the years as one of my closest friends lives there, but she's about to move house. So, Chris and I made the most of our last visit before she relocates - and the weather was certainly kind to us!

Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!
