It’s probably fairly obvious from these pages that I have a bit of a thing for grey… In fact, my entire house is decorated in various shades, with little other colour apart from plants. And, although I’ve always admired homes which combine grey and other calming neutrals with eye-catching accents, I’ve shied away from this myself as I’ve been nervous about creating anything overpowering. So, I was excited to hear about the launch of a new online shop called A Splash of Colour, which aims to give people the confidence to play around with brighter elements.
The site’s curated selection of products covers furniture and home accessories – everything from lampshades to cushions to side tables – and the simple, well-designed search function allows you to bring up items in a specific hue. Shades range from postbox red and canary yellow to more muted pastels and navy, so finding the perfect addition for your scheme is a breeze. As you can see from these images, they’re not at all garish – and there’s even a collection in my beloved grey!
Inspired to start experimenting, I asked the site’s founder Natasha Broady to share some tips for interior colour-phobes like me…
Be brave
“Colour can be daunting, but it’s easy to mix in with more muted tones. A neutral colour like cool grey works well with most shades, so you don’t have to use bright walls or big pieces. The best homes are full of layers and texture, so think about this as a way to add colour.”
Remember the small stuff
“Small, interesting pieces bring a room to life, so start by introducing colour through cushions, plant pots or lighting. This will create something eye-catching without distracting from the rest of the scheme.”
Consider a room’s atmosphere
“Each room in the house has a different purpose, so think about the mood you want to create. This should inform the palette you choose, and will help you get started. A selection of two to three colours tends to work best, and an isolated pop of colour can look amazing against a neutral palette.”
Think about art
“There are so many cool places to buy affordable art, and adding a few key pieces is a great way to make a statement and liven up a neutral scheme.”
Love it
“Once you start to play with colour, it can be addictive. Start small and see what happens: I promise you will enjoy the process and love your home even more once you take the first step.”
