Portable lamps are such useful things to have around the home, especially if you have gloomy corners where cables won’t stretch, or if you want an alternative to harsh overhead lights in socket-less spaces such as bathrooms. I put together a round-up of some of my favourites last year and now there’s another beauty to add to the list: a portable version of the ‘Kizu’ table lamp from New Works, which has just been launched.
I’ve had a normal plug-in ‘Kizu’ lamp for a few years now and absolutely love it, so I was very excited when New Works asked if I wanted to test out this latest twist on the design. And it hasn’t disappointed.
Created by Lars Tornøe, the ‘Kizu’ combines two sculptural shapes that almost look as if they’re balancing on top of each other. Like the original, the portable one has a marble base in a choice of black, white or gris du marais and is topped by a striking acrylic shade. It has a three-step dimmer switch on the top, and lasts for 10-11 hours between charges. It’s also sized to perfection – smaller than the standard lamp to allow for maximum flexibility, but big enough to cast plenty of light.
It’s the kind of thing I know I’m going to use in all sorts of different ways. It normally sits on the shelving unit in our dining room, where I’ve long wanted to add a lamp but don’t want ugly cables on show. I often bring it into the living room, too, as it’s ideal when we have friends or family to visit and need a bit of extra illumination. I can even see it being used in the garden on balmy summer evenings, when we tend to sit outside long after it gets dark, or perhaps coming with us for a picnic in the local park!
The ‘Kizu’ portable lamp is available to buy now, priced at £197. In the UK, it’s available exclusively from Nest.co.uk until it goes on general release in May.
