New designs from Ethnicraft

October 3, 2022

Neutral living room in earthy beige and brown, with minimalist design, curved sofa and sculptural accessories | New designs from Belgian brand Ethnicraft | These Four Walls blog

I’ve never really covered Ethnicraft in much detail on this blog, but I’ve long admired its designs and have often recommended them to clients. So, I thought it was time I shone more of a light on the Belgian brand by sharing a look at its latest launches.

If you haven’t come across Ethnicraft before, it’s well worth adding to your radar. Established in Antwerp more than 25 years ago by friends Benoit Loos and Philippe Delaisse, it creates timeless pieces that blend form and functionality. Its main focus is and always has been solid wooden furniture, but over the years it’s also broadened its offering to encompass upholstery, smaller accessories and other materials such as metal and stone.

This autumn, the brand has branched out into wall art for the first time with its new ‘Layered’ collection. Inspired by Boomse klei, the clay layers found in Belgian subsoil, the compositions are formed from mineral pastes that are applied by hand to circular black metal frames. The results combine beautifully earthy colours with intriguing textures, and look wonderful displayed on their own or in groups.

Also new this season is range of poufs for indoor and outdoor use. All pair tactile fabric with sleek rounded shapes, and you can choose between soothing neutrals or warmer brown, ochre and copper tones that add a subtle pop of colour to your space.

Sticking with upholstery, the relaxed ‘N701’ modular sofa – one of the Ethnicraft designs that you might recognise, even if you didn’t know the name of the brand – is now available in a technologically advanced textile featuring cotton recycled from the fashion industry. It’s made in Italy using a flat-weave technique that allows movement in the cloth and brings depth to the surface, offsetting the sofa’s simple, low-slung shape perfectly.

Other updates to existing Ethnicraft series include a brown-tinted varnish finish for the minimalist ‘Bok’ dining chairs and table, and a sideboard for the grooved ‘Roller Max’ collection. The latter is perhaps my favourite of all the new additions thanks to its sophisticated air and elegant, slimline legs. There’s also a new wall-shelf unit in three different sizes for the ‘PI’ family, which mixes clean lines with organic shapes inspired by the natural world.

Finally, Ethnicraft has introduced two different sets of sculptural bookends: the ‘PI’ bookends, which sport graceful curves and can be stood either way up, and the pyramid-like ‘Grooves’ design. Both are hand-carved from sycamore or mahogany, ensuring no two pairs are alike, and make stunning decorative pieces in their own right.

I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley a I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley and I have been working on for the past few months: a new book!

Called Bring The Outside In, it explores how to harness the wellbeing-enhancing power of biophilic design (design that reconnects you with nature) in your own home. It's packed with clear, practical advice, plus peeks inside 12 beautiful real-life homes that demonstrate biophilic design in action in a wide range of settings, from city apartments to rural farmhouses.

I feel incredibly proud to have written one book, let alone two, and this one was extra-special for two reasons. Firstly, it's a topic that I've long been fascinated by and one that combines two of my passions, interior design and nature. And secondly, I was lucky enough to work on it with a friend. We had so much fun travelling around Europe capturing the homes featured (some very brief glimpses to whet your appetite here!) and we'll share some behind-the-scenes snippets soon.

Bring The Outside In will be published by @rylandpetersandsmall on 14th October and is available to pre-order now - just follow the link in my bio.

I've spent many happy times there over the years as one of my closest friends lives there, but she's about to move house. So, Chris and I made the most of our last visit before she relocates - and the weather was certainly kind to us!

Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

A few snaps from the gorgeous @gubiofficial showro A few snaps from the gorgeous @gubiofficial showroom in London, which I visited during @clerkenwelldesignweek earlier this week. I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Which room or corner is your favourite...?
