The latest new-season designs to catch my eye come from Copenhagen-based Kristina Dam, whose work is known for its sculptural, minimalist qualities and never fails to inspire.
Originally a graphic designer and architect, Kristina launched her studio in 2012. Her first collection, a series of limited-edition prints, was such a hit that she soon branched out into furniture and home accessories, and I’ve become a big fan of her pieces. They often pair geometric shapes with striking materials such as marble and brass, and her autumn-winter 2019 range features some beautiful examples.
New additions include the ‘Japanese Stool’, which brings together Nordic functionality and Japanese simplicity. Made from solid oak and available in three sizes, it can be used as a side table, a nightstand, a pedestal for plants and artwork… or as a stool, of course! And if you decide to do the latter, there’s an optional seat cushion in soft beige leather.
Oak also features in the ‘Stack’ boxes – a mobile and very versatile storage solution that I can see working in everything from living rooms to children’s bedrooms. They’re available as single units or sets of three, and have slim walnut legs for easy stacking.
A few existing Kristina Dam series have been updated, too, with ‘Mocca’ marble-topped options for the ‘Mirror’ and ‘Cube’ tables, and a dinner plate joining the minimalist ‘Setomono’ tableware collection.
New accessories come in the form of the oak ‘Column’ coat rack, inspired by architectural lines, and the ‘Apothecary’ vases, which are a modern take on the jars used by ancient apothecaries. They’re made from porcelain, with a matte finish on the outside and a waterproof glaze on the interior, and have two differently shaped lids. I also love the look of the ‘Easel’ mirrors, which take their inspiration from – you’ve guessed it – painters’ easels. They have a wonderfully simple, lightweight expression, and come in small and full-length versions.
My favourite piece, though, is the graceful and eye-catching ‘Cupola’ sculpture, which is based on Greek arches and vaults. It’s crafted from porcelain and would look stunning on a coffee table, shelf or sideboard.
