As anyone who reads my posts regularly will know, I’m a bit obsessed with scented candles (you can find a round-up of my favourites here). I light them almost every evening, and there’s something about their softly glowing light and subtle fragrance that instantly calms my mind after a busy day. One of my go-to brands is Copenhagen-based Skandinavisk, whose range celebrates different aspects of Scandinavian landscapes and lifestyles. So, I was excited to learn that it’s just launched a brand-new collection called ‘Escapes’.
Inspired by the Nordic love of escaping to nature – of swapping city life for remote cabins and summer houses hidden deep in the wilderness – the collection consists of just three scents, all created to leave a lasting impression of peace and tranquility. They mark a departure from Skandinavisk’s existing visual identity and are hand-poured into stylish and understated matte white votives with raw oak lids, rather than the normal glass designs.
‘Lysning’ (Forest Glade) is a blend of mosses, lichens, pine needles and cloudberry, designed to evoke silent clearings among boreal trees – hidden spots where the sunlight breaks through the dense canopy to touch the forest floor.
‘Rosenhave’ (Rose Garden) is a delicate combination of alba rose, elderflower, blackcurrant buds and lily of the valley. It conjures up flower-filled gardens, where fragrant spring blooms emerge after the long, frozen winter.
‘Heia’ (Heathland) contains heather, thyme, bearberry and leaf sap. It was inspired by the high-altitude fells of Norway and Sweden, which are home to hardy shrubs, swathes of heather, and wild herbs and berries.
All three candles are made from rapeseed wax, perfume and cotton wicks, and burn for up to 65 hours. They’re available to order now from Skandinavisk’s website, with international shipping on offer. And if you want to know a bit more about the fascinating story behind the brand, take a look at my 2016 interview with co-founder Shaun.
