It’s that time of year when homeware brands start releasing details of their new-season collections, and I’ll be sharing a peek at some of my favourites over the coming weeks. I’m starting with one that I always look forward to seeing: Ferm Living’s.
Ferm’s spring-summer 2019 range is packed with beautiful pieces, but that’s not the only reason it appeals: I also love the way it’s been presented. Unlike its previous few collections, which were shot in its Copenhagen show apartment, the latest catalogue was photographed in a series of real-life rooms, each styled with input from a person who has a particular connection to the space in question – Berlin-based baker Ruth Barry for the kitchen, Japanese salon owner Ryoko Hori for the bathroom, French fashion designer Amélie Pichard for the bedroom. The resulting images not only provide lots of decor inspiration, they also explore the concept of ‘home’ and what it means to different people, as Founder and Creative Director Trine Andersen explains:
“A home is about so much more than things. Home is where the people we love come together, where we share ups and downs, and where life just happens regardless of our plans. So, this edition is not just a listing of the individual rooms, it’s an exploration of the little scenes that take place every day. It’s a panoramic view of the spaces where we live our lives, shaped by our favourite things, memories and people.”
The overall look of the collection is warm and earthy, with lots of rich browns, russets and terracottas that have an air of the 1970s about them. They’re offset by sophisticated black and grey accents in sleek marble and steel, as well as wonderfully cosy textiles that are often displayed in interesting ways (think rugs and bedspreads used as wall hangings).
Among the brand-new pieces to catch my eye are the ‘Rico’ sofa and armchair, whose graceful curves are designed to embrace and cocoon. They’re covered in a super-soft and extremely versatile beige bouclé fabric.
Another stand-out is the ‘Place’ bench, which was conceived as an art piece as much as an item of furniture. Made from blackened steel, its unbalanced geometric forms look different depending on the angle from which they’re viewed. Just as striking is the ‘Distinct’ acrylic-stone side table, whose abstract shape was inspired by Japanese minimalism.
There are lots of exciting launches when it comes to accessories, too. The ‘Arum’ lamp series, which combines a black marble base with an elegant leaf-shaped shade, instantly grabbed my attention, as did the sculptural ‘Shell’ pots, ‘Orb’ watering can and ‘Hourglass’ planters. I also love the look of the minimalist ‘Trace’ wall clock and the ‘Pond’ kitchen trivets, whose organic outlines were inspired by pools of water. And there are lots of new textiles to admire, including the colour-blocked ‘Shay’ patchwork cushions and blanket, and the monochrome ‘Way’ series, which is made from recycled plastic bottles.
In addition, a few of Ferm Living’s existing designs have received updates for the new season. My favourites are the ‘Ripple’ glassware, which is now available in smokey grey as well as clear, and the black version of the strap-hung ‘Enter’ mirror. The range of understated black bathroom accessories has also been extended.
