I’ve long been a fan of String’s flexible shelving system, so I was very excited to see that the company is expanding its range once again this year.
First created by Swedish architect Nils Strinning back in 1949, the modular system offers the perfect balance of form and function. The lightweight iron-wire side panels allow shelves and cupboards of various sizes to be incorporated and repositioned as needed, allowing you to build a bespoke unit that fits your space and needs. It’s become something of a Scandinavian classic, and over the years the original design has been joined by the ‘String Plex’ plexiglass range, a series of bowl attachments and the ‘String Pocket’ wall-mounted system (which I have in my home office).
Launched at the IMM Cologne design fair last week, the latest additions include hooks, mirror cabinets, clothes hangers and even a module for holding wine glasses, opening up even more possibilities. Here’s a peek at the publicity photos (styled by Swedish studio Lotta Agaton), which provide plenty of inspiration for imaginative ways you can use shelving – String or otherwise – in different ways around the home.
