Palazzo Monti – a stunning Italian pop-up hotel from Vipp

February 22, 2023

Frescoed ceiling, patinated walls and contemporary furniture at Palazzo Monti - a stunning Italian pop-up hotel combining Scandinavian minimalism with Baroque maximalism from Danish design brand Vipp | These Four Walls blog

I’m always excited when Danish design brand Vipp announces a new addition to its ever-expanding portfolio of bookable one-of-a-kind accommodation options, and I’ve had the pleasure of visiting (though sadly not staying!) at one of them myself. They’ve just released details of their latest opening, and this time there’s a twist – it’s not in Scandinavia but Italy, and it’s not a permanent fixture but a pop-up hotel created to mark this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan.

The venue is Palazzo Monti, a 13th-century palace located an hour away from Milan in the city of Brescia. Founder and curator Eduardo Monti has hosted more than 200 artists in residence since he opened its doors in 2017, and now Vipp is taking over part of the space for what’s being dubbed its first ‘liveable installation’.

The project was styled by Danish interior designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard using furniture and accessories from Vipp’s own collection, and the result is a stunning fusion of Baroque maximalism and Nordic minimalism. Interiors that mix old and new never fail to appeal to me but this takes things to an entirely new level, with clean, contemporary lines alongside 18th-century frescoes, marble fireplaces and ornately carved doorways and balustrades.

Accessed via a grand staircase, the main suite encompasses a hallway, a salon, a bedroom and an adjacent bathroom. All are furnished with minimalist pieces in metal, black leather, marble and soft beige wool, creating a striking contrast with the time-worn stone, warm terracotta hues and pale-green accents of the building.

Mølsgaard has also created a communal area on the ground floor, where guests can chat over coffee with the residency programme’s current artists. Here, a Venetian ceiling and glossy jade-green floor tiles are offset beautifully by Vipp’s sleek ‘V1’ modular kitchen system in matt black, together with a limited-edition ‘Monti’ version of its swivel chair featuring richly woven upholstery from renowned Italian textile company Torri Lana.

The whole place looks absolutely spectacular, and I should imagine it will book up very quickly. After all, who wouldn’t want to wake up under those ceilings, with bright Italian sunshine streaming in through the windows and the scent of a freshly brewed espresso drifting up from below…?

The pop-up Palazzo Monti hotel will be open from 18th April to 18th May 2023. Prices and booking information are available on request via Vipp.com.

I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley a I'm so excited to reveal what @tiffanygrantriley and I have been working on for the past few months: a new book!

Called Bring The Outside In, it explores how to harness the wellbeing-enhancing power of biophilic design (design that reconnects you with nature) in your own home. It's packed with clear, practical advice, plus peeks inside 12 beautiful real-life homes that demonstrate biophilic design in action in a wide range of settings, from city apartments to rural farmhouses.

I feel incredibly proud to have written one book, let alone two, and this one was extra-special for two reasons. Firstly, it's a topic that I've long been fascinated by and one that combines two of my passions, interior design and nature. And secondly, I was lucky enough to work on it with a friend. We had so much fun travelling around Europe capturing the homes featured (some very brief glimpses to whet your appetite here!) and we'll share some behind-the-scenes snippets soon.

Bring The Outside In will be published by @rylandpetersandsmall on 14th October and is available to pre-order now - just follow the link in my bio.

I've spent many happy times there over the years as one of my closest friends lives there, but she's about to move house. So, Chris and I made the most of our last visit before she relocates - and the weather was certainly kind to us!

Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.
