SP34 has long been one of my favourite Copenhagen hotels – in fact I think I’ve stayed there five times over the years. So, I was happy to hear that owner Brøchner Hotels (which is also responsible for another regular haunt, Hotel Danmark) has opened a set of serviced apartments alongside the existing guest rooms.
Located next door to the main hotel in the city’s Latin Quarter, the 26 apartments sit in a red-brick building dating from 1904. The whole place has been carefully renovated to bring it up to date without losing any of the period character, and the original arched windows, wrought ironwork and corner tower all remain.
Options range from bijou ‘Studios’ for two people to airy ‘Superior’ apartments sleeping four. There are also ‘Loft’ apartments with their own balconies, plus a spacious penthouse with fantastic city views. All have the same calm, modern decor, with sleek wooden floors, soft white walls and natural oak offset by muted blue and grey accents.
Alongside Danish design classics such as Louis Poulsen lamps and Carl Hansen & Søn CH24 ‘Wishbone’ chairs, the furniture encompasses custom-made pieces designed with multi-functionality in mind. The sofas can be converted into extra beds and, because of their height, they double as dining and work areas. The nightstands, meanwhile, function as stools to provide extra seating around the tables or by the deep counter-like windowsills. The iconic wooden headboards from Hotel SP34 have also been incorporated, here painted in dark petrol blue rather than grey to give the apartments their own identity. The curved shape and brown leather head cushions mean they’re ideal for sitting up in bed with a book or coffee, and I can testify to how comfy they are!
The kitchenettes are small but beautifully done, with bespoke oak cabinetry from Køkkensnedkeren enhancing the warm Nordic vibe. The same applies to the bathrooms, which mix grey stone tiles with oak vanity units to echo the material and colour palette elsewhere.
Optional breakfasts and room service are available, and cots, changing mats and high chairs can be added on request for those travelling with babies. There are also lots of little touches, including REN products and a local guide full of tips. I particularly like the sound of the cookbooks provided, which contain easy recipes made using only the appliances and utensils found in the kitchenettes. Best of all, guests get full access to the terrace, lounge and bar at Hotel SP34, including the complimentary wine hour (5-6pm), nightcap hour (10-11pm) and morning drip coffee (6-11am). And if you’re staying on a long-term basis, there’s no limit to the number of days you can claim your free treats.
