Styling an autumn table with Rose & Grey

September 18, 2017

[This is a paid partnership with Rose & Grey, but all words and opinions are my own]

As much as I love the balmy days of summer, I always get excited when the first hint of autumn appears in the air. There’s something special about the crisp mornings, the golden light, the shifting colours of the trees and fields… And, as the evenings grow darker and colder, I have the perfect excuse to cosy up with candles, blankets and a crackling fire.

Autumn is also a wonderful time of year for relaxed gatherings with family and friends, and I love hosting dinner parties that make the most of all the delicious harvest produce. I always dress the table for the season, and this year I’ve had fun styling our dining room with some of the new autumn arrivals from Rose & Grey. It’s one of my go-to places for stylish homeware and furniture, and its latest range brings together lots of Scandinavian-influenced textures and muted colours that are right up my street.

For my autumn table I wanted to avoid all the usual clichés – pine cones, squashes, russet reds and oranges – and instead create a more understated look using a blush, white and green palette. My starting point was a beautiful linen tablecloth in dusky pink, one of this season’s trending colours. The gently crumpled texture is perfect for informal meals, and it’s a great option for anyone who can’t stand the thought of ironing!

To this I added Rose & Grey’s white-glazed tableware, whose running glaze blends white and silvery-grey tones. The technique means that each plate and bowl is unique, and the subtle differences suited the laid-back yet elegant feel I was aiming for. I also used a simple and timeless glass jug, which is ideal for airing and serving wine.

For the centrepiece, I arranged seasonal blooms in a concrete pot, whose mottled surface added another element of texture to the table. I chose muted pink and white flowers to compliment the tablecloth and ceramics, along with a big bunch of eucalyptus for extra foliage and fragrance. I also placed a single stem on each plate – a super-easy way to make place settings look that little bit more special.

For the finishing touches I turned to some of my autumn essentials – lots of candles, and a soft, snuggly sheepskin. I often drape sheepskins over our Bertoia dining chairs as I love the contrast between the metal lattice and the fluffy wool, and Rose & Grey’s Icelandic long-hair version is possibly the most luxurious one I’ve ever come across. Perfect for lingering long into the night over good food, lots of laughter and a bottle or two of wine…

Snaps from a lovely long weekend in leafy Richmond Snaps from a lovely long weekend in leafy Richmond, West London. I've spent many happy times there over the years as one of my closest friends lives there, but she's about to move house. So, Chris and I made the most of our last visit before she relocates - and the weather was certainly kind to us!

Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!
