Sharing a home with a cat or dog is wonderful, but there’s no denying they bring with them a lot of paraphernalia – beds, bowls, scratching posts, toys, litter trays… Most of it isn’t exactly pretty, and it’s certainly not ideal if you’re a minimalist who can’t stand clutter! Luckily, there are places where you can find stylish pet accessories to suit a range of budgets, so I’ve rounded up a few of my favourites below. Their designs will integrate easily into your decor while also keeping your furry friends happy, and most of them are much more durable and sustainable than the flimsy plastic options available in standard pet stores.
Of course, this post is also an excuse to show some incredibly cute photos, including a couple of my own feline house mate Loki. Trust me when I say that narrowing down the selection of images to use was rather tricky!
Made.com
First up is Made.com, which has a fantastic collection of affordable cushions, beds and bowls for dogs and cats. There are lots of chic greys and sleek wooden curves, with occasional splashes of teal and mustard yellow. Prices range from just £16 for a mat to £159 for an ash bed, and all items are available for express delivery. Loki has the soft and snuggly ‘Hyko’ felt bed, shown in the first image below, and the elegant ‘Archie’ marble food bowl. Both cost £29 and have proven incredibly popular, although he refused to sit in the bed on demand for photos (despite the fact he curls up in it most evenings!).
MiaCara
Next is German brand MiaCara, which has a vast range of minimalist accessories for dogs and cats. There are cushions and beds in a huge array of sizes and styles, along with food bowls, scratching posts, toys and more. Several of the products have won design awards in recent years, including the Bauhaus-inspired ‘Sitto’ litter box and modular ‘Albergo’ climbing frame. There’s no denying they’re the most expensive of the brands featured here, with prices ranging from €29 all the way up to €499, but if you want a stylish and practical item that will last for years to come, they’re pretty hard to beat.
My Kotty
With an array of products designed specifically for cats, Polish brand My Kotty aims to balance functionality with a stylish, contemporary aesthetic. Many of its beds, scratching posts and mats are made from sturdy cardboard, which is recyclable and highly appealing to cats; there are also pillows and cushions with washable cotton covers. Prices range from €17 to €69, and items can be shipped to most countries. Loki has the ‘Lui’ scratcher (€59.95) and is a big fan of the corrugated surface (ideal for keeping claws in tip-tip condition) and curved shape (perfect for lounging), as well as the fact he can sit in it as well as on it.
Cox & Cox
British homeware shop Cox & Cox has a small but perfectly formed collection of beds designed to appeal to both dogs and cats. There are covered ‘pet houses’ that provide comfortable retreats for furry friends, as well as grey and blush-pink floor cushions and even a retro-looking ‘pet cocoon’. The rattan sides and herringbone wool covers are perfect for rustic interiors, and prices range from £85 to £225. There’s also a selection of dog leads and collars starting at £35.
Cloud 7
Founded by former fashion designer Petra Jungebluth in 2011, Berlin-based Cloud 7 describes itself as a ‘designer label for dogs’. The company aims to meet pets’ needs while also integrating with sophisticated home decor, and its vast selection encompasses everything from beds, blankets and bowls to coats and collars. All its products are made from durable materials by family-run manufacturers, and a commitment to sustainability and fair trade sits at the core of the business. Prices range from €9 for a toy to €499 for the largest and most luxurious bed (smaller beds start at €109), and orders can be shipped worldwide.
Shiro & Malou
Also specialising in stylish accessories for dogs is Swedish brand Shiro & Malou. It began life when founder Mats set about creating a minimalist, comfortable and washable bed for his own pets, but the range has since expanded to include collars, leads, toys and ceramic bowls. Prices start at €7 for toys, €10 for bowls and €30 for beds, and items can be delivered across Europe. The beds – all handmade in Italy – remain particularly popular and come with a one-year guarantee.
Made.com kindly gifted Loki’s bed and food bowl, but I was not asked to write this post or include them in it. As ever, all words and opinions are my own.
