Happy Monday everyone! I want to start the week by introducing a beautiful tableware collaboration from talented London designer Nina Woodcroft, whose studio Nina+Co was formed in 2014, and consultancy The Ceramicists. Entitled the ‘Breakfast Collection’, it includes a plate, a bowl, a mug, a butter dish and an espresso cup that doubles as an egg cup, and the second batch has just gone on sale. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a couple of the bowls, and I can’t wait to treat myself to a few more items from the range.
The collection has a wonderfully tactile combination of smoky glazing and darker, non-glazed bottoms. The blue-grey colour is beautiful: it reminds me of stormy skies, and it’s offset by a delicate band around the rim. I also love the organic shapes and mottled texture; they’re perfectly imperfect, and provide an ideal excuse to linger over a long, lazy breakfast.
Much of Nina’s inspiration comes from her multicultural heritage – her mother is Australian, her father Indian / Danish, and she was born and bred in vibrant Camden. There’s a definite hint of Scandinavia in the simple lines of her work, and in the way she mixes form and function to create artistic objects that can be used every day.
Most importantly, Nina has a commendable commitment to sustainability. She only uses environmentally-friendly materials (the clay for the Breakfast Collection was sourced from Devon, Cornwall, Shropshire and Derbyshire), and she batch-produces items in order to maximise efficiency and reduce waste. Her studio also supports two fantastic social enterprise projects: a Soho-based café for homeless charity Centrepoint, and a café for Luminary Bakery, which offers opportunities for vulnerable women in East London to build a future for themselves and their families through baking.
