The Edit | A summer dinner party

July 28, 2023

Minimalist table styling with beige linen tablecloth and napkins, black stoneware plates, rattan napkin rings, seasonal flowers, dried glasses and candles | The Edit - a summer dinner party | These Four Walls blog

A couple of weeks ago I shared an Instagram reel showing how I’d styled the table for a summer dinner party with friends. I had lots of people asking where various items came from, but I’ve had most of them for ages and sadly they’re no longer available. So, I thought I’d use my latest instalment of ‘The Edit’ to round up some alternatives to help you recreate the look for yourself.

I love styling simple yet beautiful tablescapes, and over the years I’ve built up a little collection of crockery, vases, candleholders and linens that I can use in different ways. This particular look was inspired by some woven rattan napkin rings that I picked up in Colombia (I’ve included some similar ones below) and the key to making it work is incorporating elements of contrast – pairing sleek black tableware and minimalist chrome candleholders with organic shapes and unexpected textures. For the centrepiece, I created a trio of mini vase arrangements using dried grasses, which add another textural touch and evoke the long, golden days and harvests of late summer. I also mixed in some fresh flowers and foliage from the garden, but they’d look just as good on their own.

I now have this design in three different colourways around the house, and this is definitely my favourite to date!

A few weeks ago I travelled to Drammen in Norway f A few weeks ago I travelled to Drammen in Norway for the big project I'm working on (more on that soon), and while I was there I had a look around @askogeng's workshop. I've been a fan of their sustainable bamboo kitchens and furniture for a long time, so this was a real treat. And the space itself is full of the time-worn textures and beautiful details that always catch my eye.

Is it just me, or are slightly droopy flowers the Is it just me, or are slightly droopy flowers the most elegant? Anyway, these are butterfly ranunculus - always a favourite. I couldn't resist the lovely soft peach ones - such a pretty colour for spring.

If you've seen my Stories, you'll know we've had a stressful Sunday and Monday thanks to a poorly cat and some big house news. At least it's only a four-day week!
