I’m a bit late with my first Urban Jungle Bloggers post of 2016 as I’ve been waiting for enough light to take the photos. The challenge set by hosts Igor and Judith this month was to show off our ‘kitchen greens’ and, although I instantly loved the topic, our kitchen happens to be the darkest room in our house!
As a result these aren’t my best-ever images, but I still wanted to share them as I always have fresh herbs dotted around the worktops and windowsill. They add much-needed greenery and smell wonderful, and I like having them to hand to stick in food (and Gin & Tonics – it sounds odd, but chopped coriander and a couple of slices of fresh chili work brilliantly as a G&T garnish!).
At the moment I only have basil and coriander, as my rosemary plant sadly didn’t survive a few days without water while we were away over Christmas, but I’m planning to replenish my stocks soon. I’ve planted the basil in my all-time favourite container – an Uashmama washable paper bag from The Future Kept. I love its relaxed, slightly crumpled look (perfect for a kitchen), and you can roll it up and down as the plant inside grows.
While I’m on the subject of our kitchen, it’s the latest room in our house to be nearing completion, and I’d love to know what you think. It’s a long, narrow room, with only one small window and the remnants of an old internal wall separating it into two areas. We’ve tried to keep the look minimal and airy, with white walls and units, wooden worktops, and a few open shelves for displaying crockery and glassware (plus a vintage French coffee grinder which I found at a flea market). We’ve also just had downlighters installed in the ceiling and a row of low-hanging pendant lights added down one side. I think the room still needs a final finishing touch, but I’m not sure what (artwork? tiles? some more shelves?), so if you have any ideas please do leave a comment below!
