Vintage-style lighting (& discount!) from William & Watson

September 30, 2015

Vintage-style lighting (& discount!) from William & Watson | These Four Walls blog

Lighting is probably one of the most important aspects of good interior design, but in my experience it’s also the trickiest to source; whenever I decorate a room, I seem to spend ages hunting far and wide for something to match whatever look I’ve conjured up in my head, often to no avail. So, on a recent quest for the perfect filament bulbs for our kitchen, I was delighted to stumble across artisan lighting brand William & Watson.

William & Watson began life in 2014 and was the brainchild of Charlotte Martin, who originally hails from France but now lives in London. She and her business partners share a love for industrial design, and their products reflect the functionality, durability and beauty of engineered structures; in fact, Charlotte lists famous Roman aqueduct the Pont du Gard, whose soaring arches have stood in Provence for almost 2,000 years, among her inspirations.

The collection encompasses vintage-style bulbs in a huge variety of shapes and sizes – classic squirrel-cage designs, eye-catching diamonds, funky tubes – as well as LED equivalents which are just as stunning but guzzle far less energy. There’s also a range of ceiling roses, bulb holders and cables that you can mix and match to create your own bespoke lighting, plus desk lamps and cage lights with industrial influences.

It’s the kind of lighting that works brilliantly when hung in rows or clusters above worktops or dining tables, and you can vary shapes and drop lengths to create all sorts of interesting effects. The bulbs also look striking on their own, dangling low beside beds or chairs or even suspended from brackets and hooks. Some inspiration from around the web below…

Snaps from a lovely long weekend in leafy Richmond Snaps from a lovely long weekend in leafy Richmond, West London. I've spent many happy times there over the years as one of my closest friends lives there, but she's about to move house. So, Chris and I made the most of our last visit before she relocates - and the weather was certainly kind to us!

Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I Some photos of the gorgeous @a.__gallery, which I visited on a recent trip to the Netherlands. Isn't it beautiful? Calm, textural and layered, with handmade pieces by an array of independent artists and artisans.

I've also interviewed Holly, founder of the gallery and interior design studio @avenue.design.studio, on my blog. I've always admired the elegant, timeless spaces she creates, and the way she reflects the architectural context of each setting. I first met her in person last year, when I featured her own home in my book, and I've since worked with her on another exciting project that I can't wait to share soon...

I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Which room or corner is your favourite...?

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!
