Autumn-winter 2019 inspiration from Ferm Living

I have another dose of new-season interiors inspiration for you today and it’s from a brand whose collections I always look forward to seeing: Ferm Living.

Styled and photographed partly in its Copenhagen show apartment and partly in a location house, the Danish company’s latest offering caught my eye because of the way it combines neutral hues with pops of rich colour. There are soft beiges, autumnal browns and dusty pinks, offset by vibrant indigo blue, lemon yellow, ochre and deep burgundy. It’s a striking combination that can be toned up or down to suit your home and tastes, and it’s yet another interesting take on the earthy palette that’s filtering into many collections this year.

There are contrasts when it comes to shape, too. Many of the new pieces have flowing, organic forms that were inspired by nature; others are made up of clean, geometric lines.

From the former group, standouts for me include the ‘Stone’ incense burner, the ‘Flow’ brass napkin rings and the beautifully irregular ‘Speckle’ vases and pots (some of which can be wall-mounted). I also love the look of the ‘Pond’ mirror, which is based on the fluid movements of water, and the ‘Vista’ and ‘Earth’ blankets, cushions, placemats and rugs, whose swirling patterns are an abstract representation of the planet viewed from above. My absolute favourite, though, is a hand-painted platter series created as a tribute to womanhood. There are five designs celebrating femininity in its different shapes and colours, and they can be displayed on a table or hung on the wall using the fixtures that come with them.

From the latter group, I particularly like the ash ‘Oblique’ stool and the travertine ‘Distinct’ coffee and side tables, which take their inspiration from Japanese minimalism and have a definite architectural quality to them. Just as striking is the powder-coated steel ‘Place’ pedestal and side table, whose deliberately unbalanced compositions look different when viewed from different angles. Best of all, these pieces are incredibly versatile – the kind of thing you can invest in and use in numerous ways over the years.

Interestingly, recycled materials feature in a few of the new launches. There’s a colour-blocked bathroom mat called ‘Pile’, which is woven from old plastic bottles, and a set of stackable storage boxes made from raw paper pulp. I was also encouraged to see bedding and towel ranges produced using organic, GOTS-certified cotton.

Alongside the brand-new pieces are a few additions to existing Ferm Living ranges. The curvaceous ‘Rico’ seating series, first launched last year, has been expanded to include an ottoman, a divan and a swivelling lounge chair, and the ‘Ripple’ glassware range now includes wine goblets. I also spotted a white version of the beautiful ‘Haze Vitrine’ cabinet, speckled cream options for the ‘Sekki’ tableware range, and the elegant ‘Balance’ candleholder in beige, aubergine and indigo blue. Finally, the ‘Rest’ table lamp (previously available in black marble only) now comes with white marble and red agate bases.
