I love how small changes can instantly transform a room, and one of my favourite quick-win updates is choosing new artworks for the walls. I’ve already had fun selecting prints for the gallery walls in our living room, and now it’s the turn of our master bedroom.

Art is such a lovely way to personalise a home, but finding the right piece can be tricky – especially if your budget isn’t huge. It’s particularly true when it comes to bedrooms, where you need something striking enough to catch attention but calming enough to create the restful atmosphere required for a good night’s sleep. Luckily, my search was made a whole lot easier thanks to online print shop Posterlounge.

Posterlounge’s selection is vast and covers everything from traditional watercolours to modern photography and abstract art. What’s more, you can search by artist, style, subject matter and format (portrait or landscape), so it’s easy to hone in on exactly the right piece for your tastes and decor. There are even tailored suggestions for different rooms of the house.

I wanted monochrome prints to match our grey and white scheme, and I was keen to incorporate an element of nature into the room – something which is said to have a very positive impact on our sleep patterns and wellbeing. After filtering the range to show black and white photography of landscapes and flowers, I chose an intriguing trio of x-rays images of plants and bark.

I’ve been obsessed with x-ray art ever since I saw an exhibition by British artist Nick Veasy, whose work shows the inner layers of everything from animals to cars; he’s even x-rayed planes, buses and sea creatures. It offers such an intriguing glimpse into the world around us, and I love the way it combines art and science – it’s a different spin on photography, I suppose.

Ordering from Posterlounge was incredibly easy, and you can choose between various sizes and finishes to get exactly the look you want. I chose normal poster prints so that I could frame them, but you could opt to have things printed directly onto canvas, acrylic, glass or even wood.

I’m really pleased with the finished results, and they’ve made a huge difference to the room. Two of the prints now hang above the bed; the other sits on the far wall, which we’ve just had replastered and repainted to rid it of the stripy paper which came with the house. I often find myself gazing at them over my morning coffee, and I seem to spot a new detail every time I do!
