Sleek white marble is one of those timeless, elegant materials that looks beautiful on everything from kitchen worktops to bathroom floors, but few people have the budget to buy big swathes of it for their home.
Luckily, it’s easy to introduce elements of marble through accessories, and there are lots of affordable products on the market at the moment. Some of my favourites come from Rose & Grey, who kindly sent me a chopping board to demonstrate how one or two small items can instantly add a touch of luxury to any scheme.
Marble looks great when combined with other textures, and this board pairs it with wood to produce a striking contrast – one section smooth and cool to touch, the other rustic and warm. It’s a great addition to the collection of chopping boards which I seem to be amassing in my kitchen, and it also works brilliantly as a tray for coffee and breakfast in bed. I’ve matched it with a speckled stoneware bowl, also from Rose & Grey, which echoes the colours beautifully.
Other easy ways to incorporate marble include marble-topped side tables and trolleys, which look wonderfully decadent in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Many designs have brass or copper legs, meaning you can tap into the trend for metallics at the same time. I love the idea of creating an Art Deco-style bar cart which could be wheeled around as needed.
It’s also now possible to buy ceramic dinner sets designed to resemble marble. They look fantastic on the table, and can be displayed on open shelves when not in use to add a dash of marble to a kitchen. And, unlike the real thing, they’re fully dishwasher-safe!
Finally, for those who want to make a bolder statement, marble-effect wallpapers can be used to create feature walls behind beds or sofas, or on chimney breasts. It’s a little too much for my taste, but I can see it working well in large rooms with high ceilings.
How about you? Have you used marble in your home and, if so, how?
Rose & Grey kindly provided the chopping board and bowl for this post, but all words and opinions are my own.
