New designs from Muuto

Another week, another set of beautiful new products from Scandinavia. The latest come courtesy of Muuto, which has been responsible for some of the most iconic Nordic designs of recent years (the ‘RESTORE’ storage basket, the ‘OSLO’ chair). I suspect there are several future classics among its latest additions, so here’s a look at a few of my favourites…

Metal options for ‘The DOTS’

Among Muuto’s most recognisable products are Lars Tornøe’s ‘The DOTS’, and the range of coat hooks has now been expanded to include brass and aluminium options. They’re slightly smaller than the original wooden versions and so ideal for compact spaces or for use in kitchens and bathrooms. I love the idea of pairing them with dark walls to create a striking look, and they could even be used as knobs on cupboard doors and drawers.

‘FRAMED’ mirrors

Next up is ‘FRAMED’, a collection of sculptural mirrors designed by Norwegian company Anderssen & Voll. They’re available in two sizes and three colour options (taupe, rose and grey), with matching tinted glass. They look fantastic on their own or grouped together as a display.

The ‘OUTLINE’ sofa

Also created by Anderssen & Voll, the ‘OUTLINE’ sofa series was designed to complement rather than dominate a space. Its delicate legs are tucked under the base to create the impression that the sofa is hovering above the ground, and the slender arm rests and back cushions maximise sitting space. There are two- and three-seater versions, with a multitude of colours and fabrics to choose from.

The ‘OPEN’ candelabra

OPEN’ is a modern interpretation of the classic candelabra. It was conceived by Swedish designer Jens Fager, who wanted to echo the elegant curves of traditional candleholders in a sophisticated and streamlined way. It’s made of powder-coated aluminium and available in black, white, green and terracotta.

The ‘Lean’ lamp

The ‘LEAN’ LED lamp is the work of Swedish architectural partnership Claesson Koivisto Rune, who approached the design process as if they were creating a wall-mounted sculpture. It combines simplicity with a hint of playfulness, leaning into the room as if peeping out from the wall, and comes in black, white, grey and green.

The ‘COMPILE’ shelving system

Designed by Cecilie Manz, ‘COMPILE’ is a functional and flexible modular shelving system. It consists of a shelf and four tubes in differing lengths, which can be combined in various ways to suit your space and needs. The system is available in anthracite, grey and white, and can be used against a wall or as a freestanding unit. There are matching bookends, too.

‘PLY’ rugs

Renowned Danish textile designer Margrethe Odgaard has created ‘PLY’, an understated rug which combines traditional Scandinavian weaving techniques with a contemporary zig-zag pattern. It’s available in three sizes and five colours (black-white, dark grey, off-white, rose and yellow), which can be layered to form a personalised look.
