New shelving inspiration from String

January 26, 2018

New shelving inspiration from String | These Four Walls blog

I’ve long been a fan of String’s flexible shelving system, so I was very excited to see that the company is expanding its range once again this year. First created by Swedish architect Nils Strinning back in 1949, the modular system offers the perfect balance of form and function. The lightweight iron-wire side panels allow shelves and cupboards of various sizes to be incorporated and . . .

The spring-summer 2018 collection from Menu | These Four Walls blog

Today I’m taking a look at the latest collection from Menu, another of my go-to Scandinavian interiors brands. Year after year, Menu manages to deliver forward-thinking, minimalist furniture and accessories that fit seamlessly into everyday homes, and many of its designs – the ‘Bottle’ grinder, the ‘Tumbler’ alarm clock, the ‘Cage’ table – have quickly become contemporary classics. And it seems . . .

Ariake – an international design collaboration founded in Japan

January 22, 2018

Over the last few months I've seen lots of references to 'Japandi' - a fusion between Japanese and Scandinavian design which is inspiring interiors all over the world. I don't particularly like the term, but in many respects it's a natural pairing - despite originating on different sides of the globe, Japanese and Scandinavian design share obvious similarities. Both focus on simplicity and . . .

The spring-summer 2018 collection from Menu | These Four Walls blog

It’s that time of year when homeware and furniture brands start releasing details of their upcoming spring-summer collections. I’ll be sharing some of my favourites over the next few weeks, starting with a Danish company whose ability to interpret the latest trends while staying true to its own distinctive aesthetic never fails to impress: Ferm Living. Like its autumn-winter 2017 range, Ferm’s . . .

Home tour | A minimalist house by a Norwegian lake

Home tour - a minimalist house by a Norwegian lake | These Four Walls blog

It’s time for my first home-tour post of 2018, and I couldn’t resist kicking off with the Gjøvik House - another creation from one of my favourite design studios, Copenhagen-based Norm Architects. Located an hour north of Oslo, on a wooded hillside overlooking Lake Mjøsa, this minimalist abode is formed from a cluster of six overlapping cubes of different sizes. Their varying heights prevent . . .

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!

Back on the grid after more than two weeks. Thanks Back on the grid after more than two weeks. Thanks to everyone who sent messages checking I was OK - I just lost my Instagram mojo and needed a bit of a break. Anyway, here are some phone-camera snippets of life lately...

1. Guard cat on duty while I work
2. Evening light hitting the last of the Japanese quince blossom in the garden
3. Country drives
4. Coming across 17th-century graffiti while house-hunting
5 & 6. A lazy Sunday stroll on Clevedon Pier, on one of those hazy days where the sea and sky seem to merge into one
7. Keeping drooping spring blooms going for as long as possible
8 & 9. Wisteria at @ntbarringtoncourt in Somerset
10. Brunch at the always-wonderful @lunitapasteleria
11. Enjoying the balmy spring breeze
12. Stunning mosaic floors at Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire
13. Bluebell season
14. My kind of wine

I now have this design in three different colourways around the house, and this is definitely my favourite to date!

I've been a fan of their sustainable bamboo kitchens and furniture for a long time, so this was a real treat. And the space itself is full of the time-worn textures and beautiful details that always catch my eye.
