Tips for adding new-year freshness to your home

Tips for adding new-year freshness to your home | These Four Walls blog

Yesterday I finished that saddest of tasks: taking down the Christmas decorations and packing them away for another year. It always leaves the house looking bare, and there are still a couple of months of winter to endure before the first glimmer of spring appears. But January is also a wonderful opportunity for breathing some fresh life into a home, so here are a few simple changes that can make . . .

Hello 2016

Hello 2016 | These Four Walls blog

Well, Christmas is over and a new year has dawned already. I hope you all had a wonderful festive break, wherever you were and however you celebrated. Ours tuned out a little differently than planned as our cat fell ill, which meant we had to head back to Bristol earlier than planned. Thankfully he seems to be on the mend and is gradually returning to his normal self; I don't think I've ever been . . .

The most wonderful time of the year…

The most wonderful time of the year | These Four Walls blog

Well, it's finally here: that magical time of sparkling candles in misted windows, bulging stockings by crackling fires, the scent of mulled wine and pine needles wafting through the house... I may be in my 30s with no little ones around, but I can’t help getting swept up in the childlike wonder of Christmas. Tonight Chris and I will mark the midwinter solstice with a cosy meal, celebrating the . . .

Wreath-making with Ruby & The Wolf

Wreath-making with Ruby & The Wolf | These Four Walls blog

Few things conjure up a Christmas mood more than the heady, herby scent of winter foliage, and earlier this week I was lucky enough to spend an evening surrounded by it thanks to a wreath-making workshop run by my lovely friend Kirstie of Ruby & The Wolf. It took place in the most festive of spaces – The Forge, which sits in a restored workshop in the heart of Bristol. The atmosphere was . . .

The Crown at Amersham | These Four Walls blog

Over the years, squeezing in a quick December break has become a bit of a pre-Christmas tradition for Chris and me – it’s a chance to escape the shopping, the decorating and the frenetic preparations, and to relax somewhere quiet for a day or two. We always try to pick a suitably atmospheric spot and this year’s choice, The Crown in Amersham, was perfect – stylish, cosy and brimming with good . . .

Winter gin cocktails with Gintuition

Winter gin cocktail ideas | These Four Walls blog

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a few festive tipples, and my tipple of choice is always gin. Earlier this year I posted some ideas for summer gin cocktails; now I want to share some winter-themed variations that are perfect for seasonal celebrations (or just a Friday night in, if you fancy treating yourself!). To help, the kind people at Dartington Crystal sent me one of their . . .

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!

I now have this design in three different colourways around the house, and this is definitely my favourite to date!

I've been a fan of their sustainable bamboo kitchens and furniture for a long time, so this was a real treat. And the space itself is full of the time-worn textures and beautiful details that always catch my eye.
